Compass Senior Information Policy Analyst and SDI Expert, Roger Longhorn, was one of the experts invited by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA) to attend a workshop developing a legal and policy framework for the continental African SDI. The meeting took place at UN ECA headquarters in Addis Ababa between 11 and 13 December 2012. The draft African SDI strategy report is being prepared under the auspices of the UN ECA’s Committee on Development Information Science and Technology (CODIST) and will be presented to officials of the African Union, which represents all African states at the policy level, in the coming months.
Longhorn’s presentation focused on the work of the Global SDI Association, especially in relation to activities in Africa. Roger is also vice-Chair, Communications, for the GSDI Association’s Outreach & Membership Committee – www.gsdi.org.
Addis Ababa will also be the site for the next GSDI Global Conference (GSDI-14), in parallel with the continent’s Africa GIS Conference, the largest such event held periodically at different sites in Africa, scheduled for the week of 4 November 2013. Compass will be in attendance at both these events.
